An Eastern Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry

[Man Clasping Hands] Father's Messages -
March 2007

We greet you during this season of renewal, hope, faith and love!

I have no desire to sound dramatic, but I will say prison life is not a gift for those who live in a concrete world. There is no doubt our prisons protect us from a reckless society. However, there is another perspective that many of us cannot comprehend. Prison life is the sad definition of isolation and fear.

I received a letter about 6 months ago, which was sent from a long time correspondent and member of the “Fellowship of St. Silas.” He wrote to me asking for our prayers. He was concerned for his safety and personal health. He was being transferred to another facility for his safety. Just as a mom and dad feel frustrated when they see their child with an illness or in danger, I too, as a priest, feel very frustrated knowing there is not much I can do ... thank God for the prayers of our church! But sadly, just this week we received the news that he had died. What a shock! I do not write this to sadden you, I write this to say God is merciful to sinners and saints.

Here is a letter I just received from Wallace in Florida:

"I believe it was back in 2002 your prison ministry started sending me your pastoral letters, and icon cards. Fr. David, over the years these letters, have strengthened and preserved my soul during the trial I was in. Now I am happy to report that I will be free from prison that I put myself in these past fifteen years. Yet the true mercy of God came many years ago, when our Father in heaven gave His only son, to die for our sins. Only then, by asking Jesus to enter me that I was set free!!! Even though I did wrong, God never gave up on me. Please pray for me."

Through the mercy of God we attempt to spread the seeds of forgiveness to those who are the silent repentant in prison. We can only do this with your help of prayers and support. Remember to pray for those in prison.

May the beauty of heaven consume you,

Fr. David
